The district of Shivpuri is also one of the important districts of the state of Madhya Pradesh. The district of Shivpiri was previously known as the Narwar District which included the princely state of Gwalior. Later after the Independence of India, The district of Shivpuri was created with some parts of the princely state of Gwalior. Precisely the district of Shovpuri came into being in the year 1956. The town of Shivpuri itself serves as the main administrative centre for the district itself. The district of Shivpuri covers a land area of approximately around 10272 sq km approximately. The district holds in a population of about 17.25 lacs individuals with the population density around about 168 people per sq km. The district is one of the 250 most backward districts of India. It depends on the funds provided by the Backward Regions Grant Fund Program for its proper administration.
