The district finds its name in quite an unusual fashion. The district is named from two words: Begum meaning the queen and Sarai meaning the resting place. The queen of Pataliputra had her resting placed in this region and hence the name. The district was drafted out of the Munger District in the year of 1870. But Begusarai found its much awaited district status in the year 1972. The district of Begusarai is also the birth place of the famous Hindi Poet ‘Ramdhari Singh Dinkar’. The district of Begusarai spans up to an area of 1918 sq km on land. It accommodates a population of 29 lacs individuals approximately with an astonishing 1540 individuals per sq km. The main occupation of the people of Begusarai is Agriculture. It exports Paddy, wheat, Mustard, etc. Although the district is quite agriculturally productive, it still finds itself listed among the 250 most backward districts of India. As many as seven rivers flow through the district of Begusarai.
