The district of Purnia is on the northern part of the Might Ganges that flows through the state of Bihar. The Purnia district is a part of the Purnia division. The city of Purnia is the main administrative centre for the Purnia district. During the medieval period, when the Mughals were at the helm of the proceedings in India, the region of Purnia served as a main military outpost for many years. The district of Purnis is also famous for the establishments of the British East India Company that ruled India for about 200 long years. The size of the district of Purnia is approximately 3229 sq km. The district has a population of 36 lacs individuals approximately and a population density of 1014 individuals approximately according to the 2011 census. The district is primarily agrarian with the main food crops being Paddy, Wheat, Maize and pulses. The district is not well developed and as a result is in the list of the 250 most backward regions of India.
