The district of Madhepura is a part of the Kosi division of the state of Bihar. The district was formed when land was split from the district of Saharsa in the year 1981. Before that Madhepura was under the administration of Bhagalpur district. The district is very famous among the legends of Hindu Mythology. It is said that this region was the ground where Lord Shiva and his disciples trained and meditated. In the medieval times the land was ruled by the great Mauryan and the Kushan empires.The district houses a population of 1994618 individuals over the land area of 1788 sq km. The Madhepura district is covered with other districts of Bihar from all sides. The district suffers from the harsh climate. Agriculture is the main occupation of the people down here. Just like many other districts of Bihar, The district of Madhepura is in the list of 250 most backward districts of India. The district is highly dependent on the funds delivered by the government of India.
