The district of Darbhanga was previously the cumulative size of Madhubani district and Samastipur district. In the year 1976, these two districts were created from the district of Darbhanga. The city of Darbhanga is the main administrative centre of the district. The district allows four rivers to flow through its heart. The rivers are: Baghmati, Kamla, Tiljuga and little Baghmati. The district of Darbhanga occupies an area of 2279 sq km, making is equivalent to the Yapen island of the country of Indonesia. The district, like most of the districts of Central and northern India suffers from three different and extremes of Climatic conditions. Agriculture is the primary occupation of the people of the district. To add to the credits of Darbhanga, it has an extremely high quality educated population, mostly doctors and engineers. In spite of this, the district finds itself staring at the list of 250 most backward districts of India. The major agricultural products of the district are Rice, Maize, oil seeds, pulses, etc. There are also quite a few paper and sugar mills.
