The district of Saharsa covers a large part of the Kosi Division. The district came into being in the year 1954. Initially the size of the Saharsa district was huge, but the district has got smaller and smaller by the time as a result if the formation of new districts by taking away lands that previously were a part of the Saharsa district. The major part of the Saharsa district was given to the district of Madhepura in the year 1981. Not a great deal of information lies with the historians about the past of Saharsa district. The district of Saharsa covers an area of 1687 sq km which is quite equal to the Berring Island of the country of Russia. The River Kosi forms the western boundary of the Saharsa district. The district does not have great deal of reputation in agriculture. But the Mangoes and Litchis of thye region are very famous. The Saharsa district is marked as a part of the 250 most backward districts of India.
