The Siwan District has been an important part of the Saran Division. The district of Siwan has the Siwan town as its main centre for administration. The district of Siwan is highly important to the people of the state of Bihar due to the historical and mythological importance that it carries. During the medieval times the district of Siwan was under the Kosala rulers. The district is also linked to a time when it was inhabited by the followers of Lord Vishnu. Interestingly the district derives its name from a ruler named Shiva Man who ruled till the invasion of the Mughals in the land. The district covers a land area of 2219 sq km with a population of 33 lacs individuals approximately.
