The district of Vaishali is arguably the most historically linked district of the state of Bihar. The district has got its name from the ancient city of Vaishali who existed during the times of the Mahabharata. The district also shows links to the traditions of the Buddhists and The Jains. There is reference to a city named Vaishali located in northern India. The ancient city of Vaishali got its name from King Vishal who ruled these lands during those times. The district of Vaishali was created in the year of 1972 when it was carved away from the land mass of Muzaffarpur district. The district of Vaishali occupies a land area of approximately 2000 sq km and at the same time supports a population of 34 lacs approximate individuals. The district is a part of the Tirhut division. The district has its headquarters in Hajipur. In spite of its glorious past the district is a part of the 250 most backward districts of India and in the present times depends of the funds donated to it by the Indian Government.
