The Saran District is a part of the Saran Division. The district is also known as Chhapra District as the main administrative city of the district is the city of Chhapra. The region was previously under Zamindars who gave lands on lease to about 1350 villages for living and agriculture purposes. These Villages had about 40 lacs individuals living in it. The rent collected from these people amonts up to about 1 million Indian National Rupees annually. The district occupies an area of 2641 sq km which is very much equivalent mass of land when compared to the Drenthe Province of The Netherlands. The district of Saran has a total population of 39 lacs individuals approximately with a density of population as high as 1493 individuals. The district is not well developed at all making it to the list of the 250 most backward districts of India. The district currently uses the funds that it gets from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Program initiated by the Government of India.
