Kishanganj city is the main administrative centre for the district of Kishanganj. The district of Kishanganj is a part of the Purnia division. The name of the district was given by a nawab of the region is some period in the past. Kishanganj is one of the oldest and the main centres for administration for the Purnia division. The district came into being in the year 1990 which ended the 17 year long struggle taken on the socialists and politicians, farmers, etc. The district of Kishanganj covers an area of 1884 sq km with an approximate population of 16 lacs individuals residing the district. There are as many as seven rivers that flow through the district. They are: Ramzan, Sudhani, Mahananda, Mechi, Kankai, Ratua and Donk. The area is mostly occupied by Muslims with Hindus scattered in clusters throughout the district. The district is a part of the 250 most backward districts and is currently running on funds granted by the Government of India.
